AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) is a world-leading manufacturer of large-size thin film transistor liquidcrystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, which are currently the most widely used flat panel displaytechnology. TFT-LCDs are used in notebook computers, desktop monitors, televisions, digitalcameras, portable DVD players, mobile phones, portable games, and car navigation systems, amongother applications.
AUO was formed by the merger of Acer Display Technology, Inc. and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation in 2001. As a result, the company is able to offer TFT-LCD panels in sizes ranging from 1.5 inches to greater than 46 inches, making it one of the few manufacturers globally with capabilities to serve from the small- to large-size TFT-LCD sectors. AU Optronics sells its TFT-LCD panels primarily to original equipment manufacturing (OEM) service providers, although the company also sells directly to brand name companies and component manufacturers.
AUO is the third largest manufacturer of large-size TFT-LCD panels in the world, with a market share of approximately 13.6%, based on units shipped in September 2004(a). The company had consolidated net sales under ROC GAAP of NT$104.8 billion (US$3.1 billion)(b) in 2003.
